Broadway & 28th Street (Chemical Bank and Garcia y Vega)

Here is another Chemical Bank.

Garcia y Vega is a well known brand of cigars. They used to have retail stores around the city.

Here is the location today.

Broadway & 22nd Street

Tragically, this block is empty due a fire in October, 1966 that killed twelve firefighters, the worst loss of life in one fire in New York until 9/11. The owner of the property, Metropolitan Life Insurance, could not find a buyer for the site until 1982, when the Madison Green apartment complex was built.

A painted ad for The Bank for Savings can be seen on the back of the adjacent building. The Bank for Savings lasted until 1922 when it was acquired by a Buffalo-based bank.
